LAI Jiajing currently holds the position of assistant conductor with the China NCPA Orchestra.
Born in Hunan, China, in 1991, she began her piano studies at the age of five. In 2003, at just 12 years old, she was admitted to the Middle School Affiliated with Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou to pursue her piano education. From 2005 to 2008, she served as a harpsichordist within the school's chamber orchestra. In 2009, LAI enrolled at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing where she studied conducting under CHEN Lin's mentorship. She earned her Master's Degree in Orchestral Conducting from Mark Gibson at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2018.
In March 2013, she had the distinct honor of being selected by Maestro Bernard Haitink for participation in a Master Class during the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland. Between 2014 and 2015, while serving as conductor for the China Chamber Opera Composing Competition, LAI also took on roles as an assistant conductor and opera coach during the world premiere of Opera NORA at Tianjin Grand Theater. Following her tenure as conductor from 2015 to 2016—highlights included La Traviata with China National Opera House in Beijing and Così Fan Tutte with Creation Opera Institute in Taiwan—invitations led her to participate in Gstaad Conducting Academy under Maestro Jaap van Zweden’s guidance in 2017. The following year saw her achieve second prize along with OFUNAM prize recognition at the inaugural OFUNAM International Conducting Competition; subsequently returning to perform a premier production titled Chamber Opera A Story About Growing Up at China's National Centre for Performing Arts—a significant milestone indeed. From 2019 through to present day (2024), LAI has been appointed faculty member specializing in chorus direction, string ensemble coaching and conducting elective courses at Tianjin Juilliard School.
LAI Jiajing's talent in music has earned her much attention in recent years from, and was recognized by, a few leading conductors including Lorin Maazel, Bernard Haitink and Michael Tilson Thomas, who also kindly offered their help in perfecting LAI's skills.
