In our Elementary School, we care about students’ growth as learners and as members contributing to their community. We believe that young people are naturally curious, and we recognize each student as a unique individual with the potential to achieve. ISB is committed to challenging and joyful learning with the freedom to explore. Our Elementary students are empowered to solve problems, question the world around them, and develop and test hypotheses in a collaborative, supportive environment.

From Early Years 3 (EY3) to Grade 5, families joining ISB have a choice of two programs in which to enroll their children – our English Language Plus Program, or our Dual Language (English and Chinese) Program. These are two equally well-resourced, high-quality programs designed to cater to different students’ and families’ needs and values. ISB was the first international school in Beijing as well as the first to launch a Dual Language Program. The program marks its 10th year in 2025-2026. With its well-established leading stance, ISB is the hub for multilingual education learning and programming in the region.

Whether English Language Plus (EL+) or Dual Language (DL), ISB Elementary School students will benefit from ISB’s signature educational philosophy as they progress through the grade levels. Elementary School is a time for learners to explore ideas, solve problems, and build trusting relationships with peers and teachers. ISB’s learning spaces have abundant resources to develop specific skills, spark curiosity, and promote and enhance peer-to-peer relationships.

Student Well-Being

We recognize that each student learns in unique ways and that students make progress in different areas at different paces. We align the learning experience with the needs of each student, and we work closely with parents to support their child’s learning journey.

ISB values social-emotional learning, under which the same priority is given to our learners’  health and character as it is to their academic performance. Our students’ well-being is a cornerstone to their success and happiness. As they learn to work together, they grow to understand different perspectives and strengthen their social skills. We nurture children who develop independence and the ability to make positive, healthy choices as they begin to find their place in the world.

Counseling in the Elementary School

Our counselors address the academic and developmental needs of all ISB Elementary students by collaborating with the learners, their parents, and their teachers. They are dedicated to helping children and their families thrive.

The Elementary School counselors work with teachers in classrooms to develop social-emotional skills, counsel individuals and small groups of students, and support goal setting. Additional support and interventions are provided as needed, in partnership with teachers and families.

As well as working with students every day, the counselors are available for parent consultations and offer a year-round program of workshops and events for families. Parenting courses run by the Elementary counselors are particularly popular, and community members have enjoyed hearing them speak about social-emotional learning and how to support your child at home, among other topics.

We understand that moving to a new school, or new country, can be daunting. Our expert counselors provide support to students and their family members through key transitions, including when a family first joins ISB and when students progress on to our Middle School.

Parents as Partners

Importantly, we partner with parents to ensure that school is fun, motivating, and a place where every child can turn to a trusted adult for help and support. With parents welcome to enjoy regular events on campus, the strength of the Elementary School community can be seen during joyful occasions like learning celebrations, student-led assemblies, performing arts showcases, and sports competitions. Other ISB traditions enjoyed by the Elementary School community include International Day, the Celebrate and Share the Arts (CASTA) festival, and Spring Fair.

The Elementary School leadership team, in partnership with our Parent Teacher Association (PTA), runs an Elementary School parent volunteer program with the goals of supporting teaching and learning and further strengthening home-to-school partnerships.

Volunteers undertake child protection training, attend a security and safety briefing on campus, and receive training from ES leadership. Opportunities range from reading and playing games with students to assisting with our bulletin boards. The Dragon Storytellers group of parents are a favorite among our classes for their read aloud sessions!

ES Program Choices

ISB values each student’s unique linguistic and cultural background. International students all have different language resources to draw on and different cultural points of view. We have structured the Elementary School with two high-quality program choices to make sure that we are providing equitable educational opportunities and outcomes for every student.

At ISB, all of our educational programs are grounded in research and based on what such studies have shown to be the most effective instructional practices for students’ learning. The English Language Plus Program and the Dual Language Program are both facilitated by highly qualified and experienced teachers and support staff. They both take place in ISB’s world-class facilities, and all students and families have access to our libraries, digital resources, and modern technology.

Dual Language Program Features

50/50 Alternate Day Model: Our program follows a 50/50 model, where students alternate learning days – one day in English, the next in Chinese – ensuring equal time and emphasis on both languages.
ISB Curriculum in Two Languages: Students learn the same ISB curriculum in both English and Chinese, reinforcing their understanding while deepening their bilingual skills.
Two Homeroom Teachers: One English-speaking teacher and one Chinese-speaking teacher work closely together to support each child’s growth across both languages.
Strong Professional Partnerships: We work closely with leading researchers and educational organizations such as the Multilingual Learning Research Center (MLRC). This helps us stay at the forefront of educating children who are multilingual or learning additional languages and ensures we are bringing the best practices to our students in both the DL and EL+ Programs.
Recognized Leader and Innovation Hub: Our program is a model of excellence and serves as a research and development center for advancing dual language education in Asia and worldwide in the international school field.

小学辅导咨询服务

ISB小学部的辅导员积极与学生、家长及教师展开合作，密切关注每一位学生的学业进展与成长需求，全力帮助孩子和家庭在学校生活中茁壮成长。

小学部辅导员与教师紧密协作，在课堂上共同培养学生的社会情绪能力。他们不仅会为个别学生或小组提供针对性的辅导，还积极支持学生设定个人成长目标。若学生有额外需求，辅导员会与教师及家庭合作，提供进一步的支持与干预措施。

除了日常与学生互动交流外，小学辅导员还为家长提供专业的咨询服务，并全年组织一系列面向家庭的讲座与活动。其中，由辅导员主讲的家长教育系列专题工作坊备受家长欢迎，社区成员也高度认可他们在社会情绪学习、家庭教育支持等方面所分享的内容。

我们理解，转到新学校，到达一个全新的国家与环境，伴随而来的也有压力。我们的专业辅导团队会在这些关键过渡时期，为学生及家庭成员提供全方位的支持——无论是学生初次加入ISB，还是小升初的过渡阶段。

家校共育

我们始终重视与家长的紧密合作，致力于将学校打造为一个既充满乐趣又充满激励的学习场所，让每一位孩子都能在这里信任成人，获得所需的支持与关爱。学校鼓励家长积极参与各类校园活动，包括学习庆典、学生主导的集会、表演艺术演出和体育赛事等，这些丰富的活动充分展现了小学社区的凝聚力。国际日、CASTA艺术节以及春季游园会等，都是深受欢迎的ISB传统活动，持续增强着家庭与学校之间的联系。

小学领导团队与家长教师协会（PTA）合作，共同组织小学家长志愿者项目，旨在支持教学与学习的开展，同时进一步巩固家校之间的合作关系。

所有志愿者需完成儿童保护培训、校园安保培训以及小学领导团队提供的相关培训。志愿者可参与的活动丰富多样，包括与学生一起阅读、游戏，或协助布置公告栏等。其中，“龙龙故事会”家长朗读小组尤其受到学生们的喜爱！
